The Durlo and Valrovina Chestnuts

The chestnut has always been a pilaster of the mountain and hillside economy. This austere plant, which requires care and attention, has suffered greatly during the last fifty years due to the exodus of farmers from the local community, who are more attracted by the economy of the cities and plains. Nevertheless, various types of production have been maintained, especially in the acid terrain of the Chiampo Valley, in the area of Durlo and Nogarole Vicentino, in the Bassano area and on the mountain of Valrovina. The varieties of chestnuts present come from a species that is common throughout the Veneto, with fruit of average size and pasta that is sweet to the palate. Various festivals are held in honour of the chestnut harvest: the most important of this is in Durlo, a small hamlet of Crespadoro, on the third Sunday of October.
